Purpose of the White Card
The White Card is an official certification that indicates a worker has completed general construction induction training. It is legally required for any person who wants to work in the construction industry in Australia. Without it, individuals cannot legally access construction sites. The training focuses on equipping workers with the knowledge to stay safe and minimise risks in high-risk environments such as construction zones.
Course Content Breakdown
The AHMI White Card course covers essential topics, including:
- Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Laws: Understanding key regulations under the Work Health and Safety Act and how they apply to construction sites. This includes both national and state-specific legislation.
- Risk Management: Identifying common hazards on construction sites (e.g., electrical hazards, heavy machinery, and heights), and understanding risk control measures to mitigate those hazards.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Proper use and selection of PPE, including helmets, gloves, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, and other protective gear to reduce the chance of injury.
- Emergency Procedures: Detailed instructions on how to respond to emergencies, such as fires, accidents, or hazardous material spills. The course also covers first aid responses and site evacuation protocols.
- Site Safety Signs and Symbols: Learning how to interpret safety signs, symbols, and colours commonly used on construction sites to indicate potential hazards.
Who Should Take This Course?
Anyone intending to work on a construction site in Australia must complete the White Card training, regardless of their role. This includes:
- Laborers and tradespeople working directly on construction sites.
- Site supervisors, forepersons, and managers responsible for overseeing site operations.
- Contractors and sub-contractors providing services on-site.
- Project managers, engineers, architects, and other professionals visiting construction sites as part of their work.
- Even those in roles not directly involved in construction, such as cleaners or landscapers, may need a White Card if they are required to enter a site where construction work is being carried out.
Course Format
AHMI delivers this course in-person, which is a requirement set by SafeWork NSW for White Card training. It is a one-day course, generally running over 6 hours. The face-to-face format allows for more effective learning, as participants can ask questions, engage in group activities, and interact with the trainer.
Participants must bring proof of identity and a Unique Student Identifier (USI), which is required for all vocational education and training (VET) in Australia. For those who do not yet have a USI, it can be easily created on the Australian Government’s USI website.
Certification and White Card Issuance
Upon completing the course, participants receive a SafeWork NSW Statement of Training. This temporary statement allows workers to begin working on a construction site immediately, as it is valid for 60 days. During this time, the official White Card will be processed and mailed to the participant’s home address.
Once the White Card is issued, it is valid indefinitely, meaning that workers do not need to renew it unless they lose the card or it becomes damaged. However, workers who change states may need to check specific regional regulations regarding the transfer of their White Card.
